We have lived on a 20 acre heavily wooded piece of property for 27 years. We have wanted to open it up a bit for a long time. I have been monitoring ads for forestry mulching and contacted Mike Blake if M.L. Blake Earthworks. He responded quickly and came out and gave me an estimate for what I was looking to do. His estimate came in less than what I was expecting.
Mike came out this past week and forestry mulched about 2.5 to 3 acres in front of our home and our two side yards. The result exceeded my expectations and while we still have a forested lot, we now have a beautiful park like setting while preserving a buffer to the street and our neighbors. It was a four day effort.
I also had some logs left over from taking 6 trees down in my horse paddock. I thought I was going to be able to get rid of them as firewood for anyone who needed but had no takers. Mike offered to mulch them up at no separate charge.

Cost depends on the pond’s size, depth, soil conditions, and whether you need drainage, spillway installation, or bank stabilization on top of the excavation itself. Small decorative ponds run less than large retention or irrigation ponds that require more grading and site work. We’ll assess your property and give you a firm quote before we start.
In most cases, yes. Virginia counties and the Department of Environmental Quality often require permits for pond construction, especially for larger water retention ponds or projects near wetlands and waterways. We handle the permitting process as part of our pond construction services so you don’t have to sort it out yourself.
Most residential ponds take one to two weeks from initial excavation to final landscaping, depending on size and site conditions. Larger agricultural or stormwater retention ponds can take longer, especially if spillway and drainage installation are involved. We’ll give you a realistic timeline after the site assessment.
A retention pond, also called a water retention pond, is built to manage stormwater and control runoff, so function and drainage capacity come first. A decorative pond is designed primarily for aesthetics and can still include aeration or landscaping features, but it isn’t engineered to handle heavy stormwater loads the way a retention pond is.
A well designed pond can support fish, birds, and other wildlife without causing drainage problems, as long as it’s properly graded with the right spillway and drainage system. We factor soil composition, water sources, and your intended use into every design so the pond works with your property instead of against it.
